Here's a brand new Sports Question:

Tyrone had a really outstanding 2006 Track Season, climaxed by a State Champion, Emily Ingle.  What was the date of the first Track Event of the 2006 Season? And what was the nickname of the event? No correct answer, which was "The Altoona Igloo Meet, on April 1.  Everybody froze.

Two Tyroners are designated as "Official #1 Fans" by the Altoona Curve.  Who are they?Just for the fun of it, we left this question up, to see how many correct answers we would get.  Lots!  Jeff Yothers was first with the answer, Linda and Larry Strong.  4/21

Let's assume that last season's Golden Eagles Baseball team had a triple play, 5-4-3, what players would have been involved, and where were the other team's players? Lots of answers giving the sequence of what happened, but we want the 2005 players who were at the positions.  C'mon!  What players had these positions last season?  If you've never used a scorebook, you won't have the foggiest idea what we're talking about.  Jim Cushion was first a month ago with the names, but had the 5-4-3 reversed.   Now, he's got it right.  5, Third Baseman Hetzler caught the fly, threw to 4, Second baseman, Ben Gummo, and on to 3, First Base, where Clint Wilson was waiting for the oncoming runner.  Lots of people had the position numbers for scoring purposes reversed. See chart below

What do these schools' teams have in common:  Mt. Union and Johnstown.  Also Penn State, Altoona, and State High.  And, Tyrone, Bald Eagle and Juniata College as well as the Philadelphia Pro Football team. And.  Lewistown and University of Pittsburgh .Jeff Yothers said, Mt. Union and Johnstown are "Trojans", Penn State, Altoona and State College are "Lions",  Tyrone, Bald Eagle Area, Juniata College and the NFL Pro team in Philly are the Panthers.  Congrats, Jeff!   3/2

PREVIOUS QUESTIONS:

A very unusual thing happened to an area high school some years ago.  One year, they had a state wrestling champion.  The next year, he was runner-up.  Then, the next year, he repeated as state champion. Then, the following year, the unusual thing happened.  They had another wrestler at the same weight class, who also took the state championship.  What school, who were the two wrestlers, and what weight.  Hint: the first one has a Tyrone connection- his son is a newspaper reporter.Marilyn Hosko had all but one of the pieces of the puzzle, she said it was Phil Bock, Philipsburg-Osceola in 1953 at 95 pounds, and then again in 1955 at 103, and the following year, same weight class, Ron Myers, also of P/O .  Congratulations to Marilyn, and to the champs50 years later.

Give us the name of the Juniata Valley High School Wrestler who's going for his FOURTH State Championship. WOW!  We had a winner within five minutes of putting this question on the website.  Jim Cushion correctly identified Garrett Scott!   2/18

Before we say farewell to the Super Bowl for another year, here's a question about the six NFL Teams that have NEVER been to the Super Bowl.  We need all six teams.  And Tom Starzecky was first with the list:  Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars.  2/13

What sport were all of these players involved in: Katie Whitby, Missy Stager, Hilary McNelis, Kim Cherry, Megan Turiano? Softball it is, and Jeff Yothers was first.  2/2.

Here's one from Radio Rich:  When you think "Penn State Sports", you probably thing "Football".  But, can you name the former Penn State and NBA Basketball Player who's now the coach of an NBA Team? Tom Starzecky knew it is Bob Weiss.  He was a Guard on Penn State's team in the 1960s before playing for severay pro teams in the NBA.  He is currently head coach of the Seattle Sonics.  Former Altoona Mountain Lion Player Danny Fortson also plays for the 2005 Sonics.   11/27

Where did Shane Barr transfer from? Corey Anderson was first with the answer, Shane transferred from Altoona.

Which Golden Eagle is/was not a Wide Receiver:  Steve Johnson, Trey Brockett, Josh Taylor?   One's a Fullback.  So, who?  It's Josh.  Jim Cushion wins a double-header, also answering the Q4U at the same time.  He's the Winner!

Let's talk Volleyball:  Which teams do each of these play for, Tyrone or Bellwood:   Lauren Carter, Ashley Roth, Meredith Palmer, Lindsay Christine, Chelsea Wilson, Kim Cherry, Stefani Bryan, Emily Lloyd, Lauren Leap, Nicole Ross, Marissa Hoover, Katie Palmer, Haley Crider. It took a while, but Hilary McNelis, from St. Francis University, came up with the right list:  Here we go:  Bellwood:  Lauren, Meredith, Chelsea, Lauren, Nicole, Katie and Haley.  The others are Tyrone.  Congrats!     10/17

John Harlow suggests that we use this question in honor of Bruce Wallace, whose death is mourned by every sports fan.  "Who was the last person to defeat Bruce Wallace in high school?  Hint:  It was in the PIAA District VI Finals in 1982. Jim Cushion was first of many to say it was Greg Wykoff of Huntingdon.  We kept the question up as a tribute to Bruce and in respect to his life.   9/11   In Memory of Bruce Wallace, a moment of silence was observed on WTRN during his funeral service on Thursday, August 18, 2005.  More than 50 persons from Tyrone made the 200 mile trip to attend the funeral service.  Thanks to each of you for remembering this man who brought so much to younger kids as their role model.

A beloved teacher whose likeness is on a plaque in the TAHS Lobby was Football Coach in 1933, 1934, and again during World War 2 in 1945.  Who are we talking about?  Hint:  Think of the man who lived with the Apes. First right answer came from Kim Hunter, who said it is Mr. Merle Stonebraker (Stoney)     8/9

Before we get too far past the All Star Break, tell us the last Pirate Pitcher to start an All Star Game. First to give us the right answer was Terry Banks, from North Ridgeville, Ohio.  We left the question on the site to see how many other correct answers we'd get.  The correct answer is Jerry Reuss, 1975.  He went up against Vida Blue of the Oakland A's.  The game took place in old County Stadium, Milwaukee, long before Harlow moved there.  The Nationals broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 9th to win the game, 6-3.  Future Pirate Bill Madlock, then with the Cubs, won the MVP.  7/20

We have reached the halfway mark of the Major League Baseball season....In the American League Statistics, only two players with over 200 at-bats had failed to hit a home run. Both played at one time for the Pirates.  Can you name them?  And the answer is......   you tell us! Michele Shaffer of RD4 knew it was Jason Kendall and Tony Womack.  She wins.  7/7

Who originated the "Terrible Towel"? Lots of guesses; we left the question up just so others could guess, although the first correct entry was from Jeff Yothers of Penn State, who said it was Myron Cope, the Stillers Sports Announcer.  6/23

You put a rapidly burning fire with a season of the year and the German suffix for "son" and you have a Blue Devil athlete.  Any ideas? We need to ask the one who answered this correctly to re-send their guess.  It was right, but we seem to have lost your entry.  OK, it was Jim Cushion, and his guess was Blaze Winterstein.  6/22

Pam Weyant and Dani Riley play for what team in this area? First with the right answer is Terry Banks of North Ridgeville, Ohio, who says they play for the Bellwood-Antis Softball team.   5/5

OK.  Time's up.  Here's the list:  Nelson Gault, George Dannaway, Bill Morrissey, Curt Hoover, Clay Fink, John DelBaggio, Thad Westley.  This was the original question:  Put these state wrestling runners-up with their correct first and last names:   ________ Gault, ___________ Dannaway, _________Morrissey, ________Hoover, __________Fink,________Del Baggio, ________Westley.     We apologize for the delay in posting thename of the winner.  However, we have verified that  Tom Starzecky's email, on 4/16/05 at 10:36:44 a. m. was the first correct response.    4/16

OUR FACE IS RED!  We goofed! Bad!  And Terry Banks was first to find the mistake.  Here's what we had as the question:  Bruce Wallace is Tyrone's only two time state champ.  But, two wrestlers with the same last name hold state titles.  Who are they?"  And, of course, we were wrong, we mixed up Gib Fink's two state championships in 1971 and 1972 with Clay Fink's Runner-Up victory two years later, in 1974. So, we'll send the prize to Terry and thank him for correcting our faulty memory. 3/27

How long have Terry Tate and Brice Mertiff known each other?   (State Wrestling Champion and #4 Ranker) Jim Cushion of Clay Avenue knew they have been friends since kindergarten. This was one of the things that both of them mentioned during the salute to them both on the steps of the Post Office March 16th.  And thanks to everyone who came out on a cold night to salute both of them.   3-19

What Ron Blazier did to the east of Tyrone, Tony Sharer did to the west of Tyrone.  What are we talking about?   Terry Banks of North Ridgeville, Ohio, knew right away:  "Played on a major league baseball team.  Blazier played for the Phillies (to the east of Tyrone), mainly as AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre, but did spend two seasons at the major league level (96-97).  Overall, Blazier pitched in 63 games for the Phillies out of the bullpen (92 innings).  Sharer was drafted by the Pirates and played in the Pirates minor league organization.  Thanks, Terry. 3/5

Important!  Ed Adams, of Bellefonte, says that Dick Hambright won a State Title in the 440 yard dash in 1955 and/or 1956.  He later attended Penn State on a track scholarship, and was a member of a record-setting mile relay team.  He was the subject of a Gary Long feature regarding Buzzy Barnes beating "Tacky" in a race from home to school.  (Click on Woodland Avenue Paperboy on Front Page of WTRN Website)   Thanks, Ed.

Referring to the last question, another state champion in a different sport has the same last name as one of those listed.  Who wuzzit and what sport did he win in?   The answer, of course, is Bill Thomas, a state wrestling champion.  Tom Starzecky was first with the right answer.  Congratulations! 2/22

Who were Tyrone's only State Champions in Track and Field? Hints:  One was in 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles, and the other was in High Jump. Jim Cushion knew it was Kevin Jenkins and Joe Thomas, respectively.  He wins.  2/17

For nearly 30 years, this TAHS  Math teacher also was a PIAA Official, scorer and timer for the State Wrestling Tournament, and for over 20 years was District 6 Wrestling Tournament Director. He was named "Man of theYear "by The District 6 Coaches Association in 1979.  He is still missed by many who saw him at every dual meet for so many years.   Who are we describing?  Jeffrey Yothers, of Penn State's AIS, knew it was Gordon Norris.  Congratulations to Jeff.    2/7

The first name/nickname of one of the founders of the Altoona Curve is the same as the last name of a Tyrone wrestler and football player who has a statewide reputation already, and it continues to grow.  What is the answer? Marilyn Hosko was first to tell us the answer, which is "Tate".  Tate DeWeese and Terry Tate.    1/24

This wrestler brought fame to Tyrone as the first state champion.  His name and the name of an attorney on "Young and the Restless" are the same.  Tell us that name.  The answer is John Dickson.

This standout Golden Eagle Football Player has a nickname that is the same as a fake coin. And his last name is the same as a male duck.  He is generally credited with being one of the best players ever to wear a Tyrone uniform.   Who is he?   The answer is Lynn "Slug" Drake.  And, Terry Banks of North Ridgeville, Ohio, was first with the right answer. He wins!  12/19

The Boston Red Sox finally ended the "Curse of the Bambino" as they swept the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0.  The most amazing accomplishment of the playoffs was the 8 Home Runs hit by Carlos Beltran of Houston...and, of course, the Astros didn't even make it to the World Series!   Can you name the Pittsburgh Pirates Player who held the Post Season Home Run Playoff Record for 22 years? Terry Banks of North Ridgeville, Ohio, was first with this:  Bob Robertson, 6 homers; 4 in the 71 LCS and 2 in the WS.  Interestingly enough, this record was tied by another Pennsylvania Player, as Lenny Dykstra hit 6 homers in 1993, 2 in the LCS and 4 in the WS.   Congrats, Terry!   11/7

Tyrone has a big line this year.  How heavy is it?  Almost the same total as the _________ when they won the Super Bowl.  Fill in the blank. Hint:  It was a pro team from Telephone Area Code 412. First with the right answer was Jim Cushion of Clay Avenue.  He wins! The answer is Steelers!    10/25

What important milestone was recently passed by Golden Eagle Coach John Franco.   And, what other coach was involved?  Marilyn Hosko was first to tell us he had his 100th win at Tyrone, and then his 101st, surpassing the record of another Tyrone Coach, Steve Jacobs. 9/10

As baseball season ends and football season begins, Radio Rich asks:  Who is the only person to play for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the same season? And what year?  Hint:  He was an outfielder, and that fall he was a kick and punt returner, and he is now a Hollywood Actor! No correct  answer to this one.  It was Rex Johnston in 1964.  He played the outfield for the Bucs and returned kicks and punts for the Steelers in 1964.  Johnston later had some roles in movies in Hollywood.  He was a graduate of Southern Cal.

Here's the answer, and Jim Cushion was first with the right list:  Tyrone:   Stefani Bryan, Katie Whitby, Hilary McNelis, Chelsea  Kephart.  Bellwood:  Becka Forney,  Meghan McAlister, Danielle Riley and Alycia O'Donald.  Congrats, Jim   7/18

There are five Blair County High Schools with a color in their teams' nicknames.  Name them and their nicknames. Tom Starzecky was first of a big group of correct guessers. He said it was Gary Ward, for the Minnesota Twins September 18, 1980.   Right!!!!         6/5

And, here is the answer:  Emily Lloyd, Emily Ingle, Emily McKenna, Marissa Hoover, Amber Davis, Erin Langenbacher, Samantha Friday, Adeena Harbst, Paige Black.  Congratulations to John.  6/5

OOPS:  We goofed.  See below. How old was Joe Paterno when he became Penn State's Head Football Coach? Marilyn was not the first.  Her entry was at 9:38:34 AM EST, and Frances Rhodes of Enola had submitted a correct entry at 2:23:36 a.m. the same morning.  We apologize to Marilyn.  However, her information was very interesting, so we will list it here. Marilyn Hosko was first with this:  Joe Paterno was 39 years old when he began his career as Head Coach of Penn State's Nittany Lions football team.  It was Feb. 19, 1966 when he took over.  He was born Dec, 21, 1926.  He was not yet 40.   Right!    5/20

In 1957, Tony Scordo went all the way to the final bout of the State Championships, narrowly losing for the top spot.  What weight did he wrestle that year?  Michele Shaffer asked if it were the 120 pound weight class.  Yes!  You win!    5/18

What was the MATT Year?  What season did the TAHS Football team have three Senior "Matts" playing, Matt Daniels, Matt Sharer and Matt Watson; plus one Junior, Matt Morrow, and one Sophomore, Matt Mertiff?   Jim Pritchard was first to tell us that the MATT Year was 1997.  Congratulations, Jim.    5/3

The four wrestlers who went to Hershey from Tyrone brought great honors to our town.  Who was the last Tyrone wrestler before Thad Westley to compete in the State Finals? While we're on the subject of "wrasslin", this one was guessed right away on WTRN's History Quiz, so see how soon someone comes up with the answer on the web:  "In 1967, a wrestler from United Joint won the District 6 and Central Northwest Regional titles at 103 pounds. Traficant, Jr., who was thrown out of Congress and is now in jail.  Ann found out that his nickname was Baretta, for his suspicious impersonation of the bird in the tv show Baretta.  Thansk, Ann.        9/4

Chris Dutrow scores a double win.  He also answered the Q4U the same day.  He knew this one:" Who donated the Team Ball from Tyrone's 1999 State Championship Game back to the school?   Hint: Think of the A & P and IGA.  Think of what comes on a rose before it blooms."  The answer is Bud Barner.  Thanks to Bud for this wonderful gift.                                       8/28

1948 was a fabulous year for the Golden Eagles Football Team.  One interesting thing was that there were two members of the team who had exactly the same first and last names, so they had to be identified by their middle initial.  Who?    If you're too young to remember, ask an older person.  They're sure to know. Vickie Burke was first with George E. Wilson and George C. Wilson.  Congrats!  7/10

What was it?"  And the answer:  Both were selected as members of the first team of the Big 8 Football Conference on November 11, 1998.  Congrats, Vicki!  5/1

We were wrong.  We should have made it the the third game of the 1939 season.  We apologize.  The answer we were looking for was just too hard to figure out.  This was the question:  "Something began with the first game of the 1939 Golden Eagles Football Season.  What was it?"  The answer we wanted was that beginning with that game came a 23 game  winning streak that climaxed in 1940 with Tyrone playing Shenandoah for the mythical state championship, that ended up in a tie.  So, no winner in that game, and no winner in this Sports Question.  Our thanks to Tom Starzecky for pointing out our mistake.      4/30

Careless writing on our part left it very indefinite as to whether we meant the first District 6 basketball or the first District 6 anything.  So, we will award two prizes.  This was the question:  " When was the very first time that Tyrone Boys won the District 6 Championship.  What year?"  First in was Jessica Germino who responded:  "...1999.  It was my senior class and it featured outstanding players such as Eric Castorina, Mike and Pat McNelis, Tyler Beckwith, Evan Klesius, Eric Latchford, plus many others."  So, she wins.  But then, tbanks emailed us this:  "I would venture to say 1981, the wrestling team won the District Title.".  And, checking Mark Westley's book, we find indeed that in the list of District Six Tournament Team Champions, in 1981, Tyrone was the AA champ with 131.5 team points. This feat was repeated in 1983 and 1985.  So, congratulations to both winners.  And we'll be more careful the next time. 3/6

She knew it was yellow.  Although he was a short time after Deb,  Jack Brantner added some interesting information.  He walked around the old park, and found some wooden boards still standing, and still painted yellow!   How about that!  The fence has been gone for 60 years!      1//4

A correct answer from a fan with the "handle" "october30th84" to this one:  What one member of the TAHS Class of 2001 won all of these sports awards during the All Sports  Recognition last May: Bud Anderson Award, Track & Field Award, Ellenberger Scholarship, and the annual Gordon L.
